Cocktail – Grappa Manhattan
Grappa, Martini Rosso, Maraschino liqueur, Angostura bitters
Date Visited – Apr 2014
I’d been to Rome twice already prior to book purchase, so this was a detour on the way home from Napoli and the Amalfi Coast, travelling business class as it was the only discounted train fare remaining! Fortunately hotel bars tend to be open all day, as my flight home was at 7pm. This particular hotel is near the Spanish Steps, the only sight I saw. It seemed such a waste not to throw another euro in the Trevi Fountain, so I guess I won’t be back for a fourth visit! I manage to squeeze in one last pasta lunch though, as well as picking up a snack for the airport at Pastificio.
I get to the bar, the cocktail is no longer on the menu, but surely all Italian bars have Grappa! The bartender informed me that the cocktail barman didn’t start until 3pm, so I hang around and admire the frescoes, as well as the crystal wall behind the bar, hence the name! The cocktail is delivered slightly earlier and you can’t go wrong with a Manhattan. The Grappa was a nice variation, but it was a strong drink for the afternoon, and a sleepy flight home!
