La Bodega is a step back in time, or even a staircase, if you can find the entrance. Hidden inside the Baehler mansion building in upmarket Zamalek, the wall art points the way to Aperitivo time. The bar encapsulates old school glam with its dark wood interior, leather seats and chandeliers. It’s a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of Cairo.
With a list of classics on the menu but no sign of any dark rum, I opted for their elected signature, a La Bodega Caipiroska. A possibly more refreshing alternative to the Old Fashioned, and accompanied by some very tasty Aperitivo style snacks. I was looking forward to visiting this one and it didn’t disappoint. Sadly the bar has since closed, so I’m very relieved to have got there in time.
